The notion of space is a broad and complex one, in mathematics alone the word is used in many different ways. It can be regarded as one of the central motivating concepts, for the subject, as Poincáre said mathematicians

must aid the philosopher to fathom the notions of number, of space, of time.

Too often mathematical ideas about space and the different ways it can be perceived are buried under the algebraic notations that gain control of the ideas. Yet the mathematical approach, in large part because of this control, is able to distinguish many different flavours of what we might consider “space”.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together mathematicians of various disciplines with artists and scientists to explore the different ways we feel and understand space, in two directions : how the mathematical understanding allows us to express precisely many different common intuitions about space (continuity, discreteness, dimension, tangent line, shape, distance…), and also how logical exploration of mathematical concepts allows us to experiment with new intuitions never seen or felt before, for example, hyperbolic spaces, tiling spaces, Lie Groups, fractals, Cantor sets, Peano curves, devil staircases, p-adic numbers…

The workshop will be held over two days (10-11 October 2017), with time for discussion and conversation. The schedule is flexible on the 11th with space for quick talks and small group discussions. All participants are welcome to suggest a short (5min) talk for the morning on the 11th, or a question or discussion topic for the afternoon.

After going through the gate turn right and go as far as you can. Take the door in the corner on your left, FRUMAM is on the second and third floors.

You can enter from either the gate on Place LeVerrier or next to Parc Longchamp. If you come through the gate at LeVerrier climb the hill we will be starting in the Maison des Astronomes. If coming from the gate by Parc Longchamp, head straight on and slightly down the hill to get to the same place. Lunch and the afternoon sessions will be in the new building (the long building up the hill straight out of the Maison des Astronomes.

In the afternoon everyone will join a small group for a discussion of a topic (the topic suggestions will be finalised on the 10th). After an hour for discussion each group will have a second hour to prepare a presentation for the whole group.

Abstracts

Peter Davidson: Sir Thomas Tresham (1541-1605) Catholic Recusant, amateur architect, and numerologist

Thomas Tresham was a landowner, Catholic Recusant, amateur architect, and numerologist. He laid out at least one ambitious garden at Lyveden (which is being restored) and built two high symbolic and number-based buildings, Rushton Triangular Lodge (1593) and Lyveden New Building (abandoned 1605). It is these spaces which I would like to show, and on which I would invite mathematical enlightenment.

I will explain something of the context of number as symbol in English renaissance culture in particular and in renaissance culture more generally. Tresham was clearly most interested in numbers and spaces. As a Catholic gentleman he was, after 1560, technically or actively on the wrong side of the English law. He was imprisoned for long periods of “preventive detention” during which he planned his intricate and allusive symbolic buildings. He also left still-unsolved sets of number-jottings relating to his buildings.

I don’t; think his works have ever been seriously considered by mathematicians. It may be that (given the circumstances in which they were made) his number jottings may only be mysteries for their own sake, transposition-based codes involving randomly « significant » dates, or simply renderings of letters as number. In which case we’ll know not to look further by the end of the discussion. Or there may be subtleties beyond the obvious games with 3 in the Triangular Lodge, and play with 4 and 5 at Lyveden New Building. I can show you measured drawings, estate plans and pages from his notebooks. It may all be nothing or it may be a wonderful something.

Arnaud Chéritat: Exploratory experiments at representing geometric notions virtually and/or physically
In the last few years I have been using 3D printers, 3D modelling software and 2D and 3D web browser technology to represent some geometric objects including :
  • immersed surfaces in 3D and eversions
  • 2D hyperbolic space
  • 4D polytopes

In this talk I will make a short review of these experiments together with a few comments on a selection of key aspects in implementing them.

Pierre Berger: Esthetopy
The exhibition esthetopy was presenting several artworks and installations. They were designed to offer new sensitive explorations inside (imaginary) mathematical spaces  still misunderstood. Some of these artworks was created during different collaborations with the artists Pierre-Yves Fave, Sergio Krakowski, Vincent Martial and Jimena Royo-Letelier. Alison Martin: Crafting Complex Structures: Bending, folding, cutting and pasting – to make mathematically inspired shapes.
Versions of complex patterns seen in nature can be generated with weaving and iterative construction techniques using simple materials and a low-tech approach.
Deconstructing space into simplified topological constituents; working with vertices and edges and modifying their connectivity offers a visual language and insight into how patterns appear from the inside out. The slow, repetitive process of hand building physical models allows unexpected connections to be made and provides tactile understanding and practical insights into spatial concepts.
Jean-Paul Allouche: Local versus global in mathematical and non-mathematical spaces

We try to underline the opposition-convergence between local and global properties in mathematics, but also in current life where global knowledge is discouraged through a systematically (and probably non-innocently) imposed local vision.

David Lasnier: Various small spaces

Some of my art projects deal with simple, yet paradoxical notions of space.They may sound ridiculous on a local scale, but make sense on a planetary or interplanetary scale. I like the idea that you have to mentally project yourself in a huge scale to understand a small object. The first part will be just a presentation of such projects as a list.
On the second part of my speech I will focus a little longer on two ongoing, more mathematical projects, one involving self avoiding hamiltonian paths and another one geometry of paper folding.

Abstract

The interdisciplinary field of emotion studies disregarded historical perspectives on translation and left out a substantial body of scientific research on feelings and emotions that was not published in English. Yet these texts were foundational in forging the scientific concept of emotion in experimental psychology in the 19th century. The current approach to emotion science overlooks that translation issues occurred between three languages, German, French, and English, as physiological psychologists at the time were reading each other in these languages all the while writing about the same topics in their respective language. Historical perspectives are important to clarify the ambiguities of emotion terms and include non-Anglophone frameworks into current transdisciplinary debates.

The interdisciplinary field of emotion studies ignores the historical perspective on translation problems. In today’s scientific publications, which are predominantly written in English, the term “emotion” is used as if it were synonymous in all languages, times, and contexts. Although the semantic fields of emotion terms are not identical in English, French, and German, these three languages informed the study of emotion in 19th-century psychology, at the time when the scientific concept of emotion was formed. Furthermore, the French émotion and the English emotion have become homonyms, sentiment and sentiment are not used in the same way, and Affekt also poses a problem. Translation problems have masked the epistemological problems that German and French psychologists in the 19th century were studying when they addressed the question of “emotion” for contemporary Anglophone psychologists and historians of emotion. Problems of translation occur on many levels. Here I am particularly concerned with two aspects, one is the historical authors’ reading of each other and writing about the same topic in a different language (applying their respective backgrounds to their readings); and, the second is contemporary scientists and historians’ reading of historical and contemporary texts on emotion, applying the current connotation of emotion. Workshop sponsored by IMéRA and organised by IMéRA Fellows P. Expert, S. de Nigris, H. Fernandes, L-D. Lord, T. Carletti (Team Quintet)

Our residency project is articulated around the integration of mathematical and computational methods to model and understand brain function. It is by definition an interdisciplinary endeavour, and our workshop will reflect this. We will invite speakers representing the different aspects that are crucial to the development of our project and, moreover, prominent figures in modern neuroscience, and have them expose an overview of their field, aspirations and most importantly open questions. The workshop will conclude on a panel discussion to foster new and common research interests and collaborations among the speakers and the audience. As one barrier to interdisciplinarity lies in the technicalities of each field, the workshop will take the form of pedagogical talks, focused on the concepts and heuristics, and a panel discussions.

The overall aims of this workshop, particularly with the final panel discussion, are tripartite: first, easying the interaction among researchers from different research horizons; second, to gain new prospectives on common questions and, finally, to join efforts to solve problems, each contributing its own expertise.
